Sustainable Haddington Meeting No comments yet

If you didn’t make it to the meeting on the 20th March, we thought about what Haddington needed to make it more sustainable, and how we might make those things happen.  Out of several themes that came up, getting allotments for Haddington came out on top, as something achievable that everyone was interested in.
So, we agreed to have another meeting to discuss what to do next.
If you would like to come along, please let me know when you are available in this doodle poll:

What Next for Sustainable Haddington? 4 comments

Nothing has really happened with Sus Had for the last year, and me and Jean felt it was time to do the decent thing and tie up the loose ends and close it down, unless anyone who had previously dropped out was still keen.  There is loads of potential, and the things achieved by Sustaining Dunbar and other groups is really inspiring, we only really need a few more willing bodies.  We wanted to call a last get together of everyone who was ever involved and chat it over.
Social Enterprise in East Lothian are keen to support Sustainable Haddington carrying on and offered to host our get together.  So, please get in touch if you would be interested, even if it is to help finish off the bike map, and distribute the remaining haddington bags.
Looking forward to hearing from you :)

Drinks at Waterside No comments yet

11 July, 2011
7:30 pm

This is the Waterside Bistro by the Nungate Bridge - it's in this one!

We are meeting up for a drink at the lovely Waterside Bistro  and to have a chat about fruit and possibly the Council’s survey on the Local Transport Strategy.  Everyone is welcome, you don’t have to have any fantastic ideas (though if you do have one please do bring it!), and you won’t get roped into anything you don’t want to do. You will need to be prepared to buy your own drink though (sorry!).

Abundance Haddington at Farmer’s Market No comments yet

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated apples to our Abundance project and to all the lovely folk who took home the delicious fruit at yesterday’s Farmer’s Market. It was great to meet so many people who agree with our cause, and even better that so many of you want to help!

This project is by no means over, we have 5 boxes of apples left over from our market harvest which will be distributed to Knox Academy, Haddington Day Centre and Tynepark. We also have several trees that are still laden with fruit, which we intend to harvest and hand out to the community. If you work/volunteer for a local organisation who could use apples please let us know. Likewise if you would like to join our team and come apple picking you are more than welcome.

We are hoping to have a ‘jam session’ at some point in the near future where we will get together for a spot of cooking using some of our harvest. Watch this space!!

Hustings No comments yet

Sustainable Haddington is pleased to co-host an event with the RSPB which will let members of the public grill their potential representatives on environmental issues. So if you’ve got any burning questions, now is the time to ask. Well not now. April the 21st. All welcome. See flyer below.

Good Food Year No comments yet

13 March, 2010
2:00 pmto5:00 pm

Trinity Centre, Haddington

FREE entry, plus tea and homemade biscuits

Number two in our CCF series of carbon footprint busting events.  Food can involve a lot of airmiles and road miles, not to mention pesticides and packaging.  What could be greener and more local than growing your own veg and carrying it a few yards to your table?  Once you’ve gone to all that effort you don’t want to waste any either, so come along and get all your questions answered.

Kitchen Canny

Kitchen Canny is a fabulous project from Changeworks aiming to get us all throwing away less of that hard grown/transported/cooked food.  Come along to find out more and pick up your FREE Kitchen Canny Kit.

Master Composters

Is your compost heap just a mass of weeds or a horrible slimey mess, then you need some a advice on how to improve your composting from trained Master Composters!

Seed Swap

Who would not want FREE seeds.  Bring along any left over seeds from last year, or ones you have saved yourself and swap them for something new and maybe exciting.

Advice on growing your own vegetables

It can be daunting starting your first vegetable plot.  Where should you put it?  What to start growing?  When to start planting?  Those packets always say February/early March, maybe ok for Cornwall, but here it is still snowing!  Get some advice from experienced, LOCAL vegetable growers, who can tell you where, what and when is best for Haddington veg.

Haddington Allottments

Have you already started your veg plot, and outgrown it?  Or maybe you only have a window sill?  We want to know if there is a demand for allottments in Haddington, and if there is let the council know about it.  Come and add your name to the list.

Fruit Mapping

We all know of an apple tree bursting with fruit, which is left to rot.  Come and help us put them all on the map.  Once we have located them, we hope to harvest that unwanted fruit and make the most of it.  So we also need people to pick it, turn it into jam/pies or pickles and then distribute it.  If you are an ace apple pie baker or bramble picker we need you!

Kids Stuff

Foodie fun and games for the kids, maybe even a little planting?

Funding for Events Programme 2 comments

We did it! We (Sustainable Haddington) have been given some money by the Climate Challenge Fund to host a programme of community events to raise awareness of climate change and how it can be tackled locally. We have quite a few ideas, and have organised some, but we still need lots more!  So far we have a  clothes swap and a food event planned (see events).  Is there anything you would like to see us do, or something you would love to know more about?

Haddington Library display No comments yet

Our very talented Events Co-ordinator Polly Cooke has been busy busy busy this week creating a fun display in our local library. We have information on some of our up and coming events, plus an ‘interactive’ notepad where anyone can leave comments and ideas on what they’d like to see us doing in the future. There’s also a box where you can leave your details if you’d like to join, or find out more information about us.
So, get down to the library and have a look and give us your feedback!
