Part of the funding from Cycling Scotland is for producing a map of the secret cycle routes of Haddington…but do we know where they all are? The map below is a first stab at what is out there. We’re trying to gather information about cycling in Haddington – any routes you know of, bits you think could be routes with a bit of a push, particular hazards.
The map below is a first stab at drawing together bike facilities. If you’ve any comments, email them to convenor@sustainablehaddington.org.uk . If you would like to collaberate on the map online let me know and I can invite you.

Launch at the Farmers Market

Whoever ordered the weather for the launch of the Haddington Bag did well; the day was bright and calm. Elisa and Polly did a fantastic job preparing and manning the stall, which attracted a lot of interest from people visiting the farmer’s market. Iain Gray, MSP, Councillor Paul Maclennan and Sheena Richardson, Provost, very kindly made time to come and support us at the launch. Many bags were sold, and more importainly, we had the chance to talk to people stopping at the stall about the plastic bag issue.
The stall had a display on the damage plastic bags can do to marine life, and the impact of their manufacture. Some furry marine life was pressed into action to help; a squid, a couple of turtles and a seal. Not quite as cute as the alpaca’s further up the market, but they made their point! There was also a free draw with the prize of a mini-hamper of fairly traded organic goods.

Haddington has many features which make it an easy place to cycle with a compact town centre, little through traffic, good off-road cycle routes, a relatively flat terrain, and a surrounding rural hinterland with many quiet roads. However, the town no longer has a cycle shop, the nearest being North Berwick (7 miles) or Dunbar (12 miles). This means that many people are put off using their bicycle because they are unable to perform minor repairs. This is especially the case for those without access to a car.
We want to encourage cycling in Haddington through providing practical support & information, and normalize cycling as a means of transport in the area, beyond young kids scooting along the pavement. Read more »

Our first aim is to set up Sustainable Haddington Ltd, a company limited by guarantee and with charitable status, which can provide local action on
climate change and
sustainable living in the Haddington area. Although still
in draft form, its main objectives are:
- the advancement of environmental protection through the development and promotion of sustainability projects for Haddington and its community,
- the reduction of fuel poverty and advancement of education & community development through promotion of sustainability issues,
- to carry on any other activities which further any of the above objectives.
The job of setting up Sustainable Haddington Ltd belongs to our interim organisation Sustainable Haddington Steering Group (for more information, read our Constitution).
It’ll all become clearer as we sort ourselves out.
Thanks to the hard work of our group we have managed to get some fantastic, ethical shopping bags just in time for Christmas, so we have decided to officially launch the ‘Hadd Bag’ and our Plastic Bag Free Campaign on Saturday 20th December at the
Haddington Farmer’s Market on Court Street between 9am and 1pm.

On Friday morning I received 1700 Fair Trade organic cotton bags sporting a delightful Haddington skyline design from ethical bag suppliers
Bags2Keep. My husband and I spent several hours on Friday night counting out the bags which had been ordered by participating retailers, and the next morning I made a mad dash in the rain to deliver them. I have to say the retailers were all pretty excited when I arrived, and by the time I’d done my rounds I could see some of them already hanging up behind their counters.
So, ladies and gentlemen…I present The Haddington Bag (and the promo poster!)…

Stuff takes a lot of energy and raw materials to make – and all of this is lost when it ends up in landfill, not to mention no-one wants to live next to a dump. So it makes sense to help that stuff live as long a life as it can. Read more »
