Local action on climate change and sustainable living

Community Rises to Climate Challenge

Sustainable Haddington, a new community group, was formally constituted at a meeting in the Bridge Centre on Monday evening. Its main aim is to tackle climate change through positive local community action and information. Plans are already afoot to help householders reduce their energy bills – a bulk-buy discount scheme for insulation measures in partnership with the Energy Saving Trust is coming soon. Projects on renewable energy, waste, food and biodiversity are also being developed.

A spokesperson for the group said: “We are all facing the challenge of climate change and an uncertain economic future. But Haddington is hugely rich in skills and natural resources. Each one of us can make a difference, and by working together we hope to benefit the town as well as the environment. Let’s make it happen.”

Iain Gray, MSP for East Lothian said: “It can be difficult for people to understand how climate change can affect them, but it is local action – right down to the personal and household level – which we need to create a sustainable future, so an initiative like Sustainable Haddington is very welcome. Particularly useful is the initiative to help households be more aware and reduce their energy bills at the same time.”

Sustainable Haddington meets regularly, and welcomes anyone keen to help or just find out what is going on. For more information visit www.sustainablehaddington.org.uk
