Small bag related things that made me smile today

Today I was in North Berwick with my Husband, daughter and mother-in-law and as we sat on the wall eating our ice cream and watching the Gannets dive bombing the water for fish we noticed horror of horror…a Tesco plastic bag blowing across the beach and into the water! As many people will know North Berwick are a PBF town and their Bring Your Own Bag campaign is well under way. Our faces fell as we watched the bag billow up and float out on the tide. “We need to go and get it back” I shouted! “Think about the birds!”. I was about to take off my boots and venture into the icy water when my Husband declared “I’ll get it”.

Luckily the part of the sea where the bag had gone in has a section which is walled off so it forms a safe haven for swimming and kayaking at low tide. The wall is low and slippy and at that precise moment the water was still washing over it as the tide was retreating. My other half decided just to risk wet feet and off he ran to get the bag before it washed over the wall and out into the North Sea. A small crowd gathered to watch him, probably wondering what he was doing. After a few minutes he reached the bag which was almost out in the open water. It took him several attempts to grab it but he did and in triumphant style he held it above his head and grinned. Just then a wave engulfed his legs up to the knees and his smile turned to a grimace as the icy water gave him a shock! Undeterred he headed back to the beach to a round of applause from myself and daughter and some of the passers by who now realised what he was doing! I was very proud :)

The bag would have been taken home and put in a bag recycling bin, had it not been for the woman who came running up to my Husband and said “Can I have my bag back please..It blew out of my buggy basket” :o This woman had been standing watching as her bag floated off and my other half risked hypothermia to get it back and out of the reach of the birds and now she wanted it back so she could collect shells!! Oh well I guess she was re-using it :/

The other bag thing to make me smile is this great short film made by the kids from Lyme Regis Primary School to highlight the problems plastic bags can cause. Enjoy!
