Local action on climate change and sustainable living

Launch of the Haddington Bag

The Sustainable Haddington community group will be joined by Iain Gray MSP, Provost Sheena Richardson and Council environment spokesman Cllr Paul McLennan at the Farmers’ Market on December 20th for the launch of the “Haddington Bag”.

Supported by funding from East Lothian Council, the re-usable shopping bag is just one strand of a wider campaign to tackle waste and promote sustainable living.  The bag is 100% organic Fairtrade Indian cotton, with a design of the Haddington skyline by a member of the community group, and will be widely available from town retailers.  As a spokesperson for  Sustainable Haddington said:

“This is a bag for life – not just for Christmas!  We are aiming to cut down the amount of plastic waste which ends up in landfill, pollutes the landscape and endangers wildlife, as well as supporting our traders and shoppers to take a real pride in Haddington.”

Sustainable Haddington was set up to take local action on climate change, with members drawn from across the town and nearby villages.   Other projects include the HotSpot scheme for cut-price insulation to local householders, undertaken in partnership with the Energy Saving Trust, a fast track service which is on offer until December 19th.
