Whoever ordered the weather for the launch of the Haddington Bag did well; the day was bright and calm.  Elisa and Polly did a fantastic job preparing and manning the stall, which attracted a lot of interest from people visiting the farmer’s market.  Iain Gray, MSP, Councillor Paul Maclennan and Sheena Richardson, Provost, very kindly made time to come and support us at the launch.  Many bags were sold, and more importainly, we had the chance to talk to people stopping at the stall about the plastic bag issue.

The stall had a display on the damage plastic bags can do to marine life, and the impact of their manufacture. Some furry marine life was pressed into action to help; a squid, a couple of turtles and a seal. Not quite as cute as the alpaca’s further up the market, but they made their point!  There was also a free draw with the prize of a mini-hamper of fairly traded organic goods.

  1. General opinion amongst day centre clients and myself is that the bags have a very good capacity for carrying shopping but the handles are far too long.
Users have stated that they cannot carry shopping bag in their hand as it is trailing on the ground. If carrying over their arm ( like an old fashioned message bag) then the bag rattles of their legs and if only carrying lightweight items then the handles twist.

  2. Hi Veronica. Thanks for the feedback, glad someone is reading the blog! :)

What I would suggest is tying a knot in the long handle which will help shorten it for carrying in your hand or over your arm. Hope this helps, and thanks again for the comment.

  3. Hi Elisa

Read your suggestion, but sorry to say I do not think it such a great idea.If I did put a knot in the handles I would have to knot both handles which would not be good, alternatively if I knotted the handles together then I would not be able to gain access into the bag, also I personally do not fancy walking around with a new bag I specifically bought for carrying shopping with knots in the handles. My suggestion would be that any bags made from now on had much shorter handles as I am sure most other people who bought the bag would agree. I will probably use the bags for something else and hopefully purchase and use another if the handles are much shorter. As I stated yesterday the bag has a very large carrying capacity which is great when carrying bulky items. I hope you get more feedback from others. Thanks for the prompt reply.
