Transport – Public Transport meeting
A brief report on the public meeting I attended on behalf of Sustainable Haddington as part of East Lothian Council’s review on public transport. Other people there were represenatives of bus companies, East Lothian Council, RAGES, Sustaining Dunbar, Passenger View, Midlothian Council.
Background iInformation about travel to work in East Lothian:
- By car – 52%
- By bus – 15%
- By train – 3%
- By bike – 1%
- By foot – 22%
- Work from home – 6%
Destinations:
- East Lothian – same ward – 41%
- East Lothian – different ward – 19%
- Edinburgh – 33%
- Midlothian – 4%
- Elsewhere – 3%
Public transport users tended to access the centre of Edinburgh, whereas car drivers were much more dispersed over the city, presumably because of the cost and time required to take more than one bus.
Points that came up where the Council might have an impact were the poor public transport links to QMU from Haddington, the possibility of shuttlebus link from Haddington to the North Berwick train line at Drem or Longniddry, information provision via East Lothian map of service provision, cycle carriage on buses (didn’t make much headway with this), and better integration of services. The consultants will prepare a report and the Council will be reconsidering their strategy in the New Year.
